Google Magenta RealTime 2: 200ms On-Device Music Generation
Google has released Magenta RealTime 2, the only open-weights model for continuous real-time music generation on-device. It cuts generation latency from approximately 3 seconds to 200ms, runs on a MacBook without a GPU (2.4B parameters), and is steerable via text prompts, audio reference, or MIDI input. The model is designed for live performance and DAW-plugin-style production workflows.
Why It Matters
Sub-200ms music generation latency on consumer hardware means real-time adaptive music for games, interactive media, and live performance is now open-source and GPU-free — collapsing the infrastructure gap between professional generative audio tools and developer-accessible open alternatives.
