OpenAI Silently Removed ChatGPT Study Mode from Menus

OpenAI removed ChatGPT's Study Mode from its primary navigation menus without any announcement. The feature—designed to make AI act as a tutor that tests understanding rather than just providing answers—remains accessible via /study and /learn shortcuts but is no longer discoverable by new users. OpenAI confirmed the change directly when asked. Research shows AI in assistant mode (answer-giving) harms learning; Study Mode was specifically built to mitigate this. Claude and Gemini retain comparable study-mode functionality.

Why It Matters

Removing the most educationally-responsible AI mode from discoverability, without explanation, signals a product-revenue tradeoff: tutoring sessions are longer but generate less engagement-style content. The move contradicts OpenAI's stated educational mission.
